About the app
What is Novelist?
Novelist is an AI-assisted story-writing app. Pick a genre, tone, point of view, and other options, add characters, and Novelist writes chapters with you one at a time — you can regenerate a chapter you don't like, redirect the plot, or fine-tune it with your own instructions. It also includes Discover, a bundled library of ready-to-read stories across genres.
Is the app free?
Yes. Novelist is free to download, and starting a story and writing a number of chapters is free. Once you reach the free limit, an optional Novelist Pro subscription (weekly, monthly, or yearly) removes the limit.
Subscriptions
How do I cancel my subscription?
On your iPhone or iPad: open Settings → tap your name at the top → Subscriptions → Novelist → Cancel Subscription. Apple handles all subscription billing — we can't cancel on your behalf.
How do I restore a previous purchase?
Open the paywall (Settings → Novelist Pro, or the prompt shown when you hit a free-tier limit) and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed into the App Store with the Apple ID you used to subscribe.
I was charged but the app still shows locked content.
Tap Restore Purchases in the paywall first — that resolves almost all cases. If it's still locked, email us and we'll help.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the Novelist purchase, and request a refund.
Using the app
How do I start a new story?
Tap Generate, pick a genre and your other options (tone, point of view, ending, pacing, audience, writing style), optionally add characters, and Novelist writes the opening chapter.
How do I regenerate a chapter or redirect the plot?
Open a chapter and use the toolbar's Regenerate or Redirect Plot options. Each story has a limited number of regenerations to keep things fair for everyone.
What does Fine-Tune do?
Fine-Tune lets you type your own instructions to steer the next chapter — a character's motivation, a tone shift, a specific event you want to happen next.
How do I listen to a story?
Tap the Listen button in the reader. This uses your device's built-in text-to-speech voice — no internet connection or account is required for narration.
How do I export or share a story?
Open a story's menu and choose Export — EPUB, PDF, or plain text — then share it however you like using the iOS share sheet.
What is Discover?
Discover is a built-in library of ready-to-read stories across genres, bundled with the app — no generation or subscription required to read them.
Privacy and data
What data does the app collect?
We don't ask for a name, email, or login — just an anonymous account used to track your subscription and free-tier usage. When you generate a chapter, the story details you provide are sent to our backend and forwarded to an AI model (Anthropic's Claude) to write the text, and your story is stored on our backend (as well as your device) so it can be continued across sessions. We don't collect your payment details, and we don't use ads or cross-app tracking. Full details — including how to have your server-side story data erased — are in our Privacy Policy.
