Frequently asked questions
About the app
What is Owe Book?
Owe Book is a personal lend-and-borrow tracker for iPhone, iPad and Mac — a private notebook for keeping track of who owes what between you and the people in your life. Record a lend or borrow, add a note or receipt, and Owe Book keeps a running balance for each person and lets you settle up. You can also split bills in a group, and share a group so everyone in it sees the same expenses. It's a record-keeping tool, not a payment app: it never moves money.
Is the app free?
Yes. Owe Book is free to download, and the free version includes the whole personal ledger — people, entries, payments, notes, due dates and due-date reminders, and receipt photos — plus one group, joining groups other people share with you, widgets, your home currency, backups, Insights, and all 17 languages.
What does Owe Book Pro add?
- Unlimited groups, and sharing a group with other people
- iCloud sync of your ledger across your devices (if you used Owe Book before version 2.0, this stays free for you)
- Repeating entries
- PDF and CSV statements
- Reading the amount from a receipt photo
- Adding entries with Siri and Shortcuts
- The Face ID / Touch ID lock
- The Mark Paid button on the Due Soon widget
You can buy Pro as a monthly or yearly subscription, or as a one-time purchase that never renews. Prices are shown in the app and on the App Store.
Purchases
How do I unlock Owe Book Pro?
Open Settings → Unlock Owe Book Pro (or tap any Pro feature), choose monthly, yearly, or the one-time purchase, and confirm through Apple.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. If you're new to the yearly plan, it starts with a 7-day free trial (Apple's introductory offer, once per Apple ID). Owe Book reminds you two days before the trial ends — it asks to send notifications when the trial starts, if you haven't allowed them yet. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, the yearly subscription starts and is charged to your Apple ID. You can cancel any time in your App Store subscription settings (on iPhone or iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions).
Can my family use Pro?
The one-time purchase can be shared with your family through Apple's Family Sharing. Subscriptions aren't shared.
What happens if Pro ends?
Nothing you've recorded is deleted. Shared groups keep working and your existing groups stay, but Pro features stop: repeating entries pause, and iCloud sync of your ledger stops, so your ledger stays on your device.
How do I restore a purchase?
On a new device or after reinstalling, open the paywall and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed into the App Store with the Apple ID you used to buy Pro. Apple is the source of truth for what you own.
I was charged but Pro is still locked.
Tap Restore Purchases first — that resolves almost all cases. If it's still locked, email us and we'll help.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find the Owe Book purchase, and request a refund.
Using the app
How do I add a person?
Tap to create a new entry and choose a person — type a name and number, or pick someone from your Contacts. Only the contact you select is used; your address book is never uploaded.
How do I record a lend or borrow, and settle up?
Create an entry, choose lend or borrow, and enter the amount, date, and an optional note or receipt image. When it's paid back, open the entry and mark it settled (fully or partially).
How do I split a bill?
Create a group, add members, and add an expense — Owe Book splits it and tracks who owes what within the group. One group is free; Owe Book Pro gives you as many as you like.
How do I share a group?
Open the group, tap Share Group, and send the invitation through Messages, Mail or a link. Everyone you invite joins free, sees the same expenses and balances on their own device, and can add expenses and record payments too. Sharing a group needs Owe Book Pro for the person who shares it. As the owner, you can stop sharing or delete the group for everyone; anyone else can leave it, which removes it from their devices.
How do I export a statement?
With Owe Book Pro, open a person or group and use the export option to create a PDF or CSV statement you can share wherever you like.
How do I sync across my devices?
Turn on Settings → iCloud Sync (Owe Book Pro, or free if you used Owe Book before version 2.0). Your ledger syncs through your own private iCloud account, and stays the same on your iPhone, iPad and Mac. Shared groups always sync through iCloud, whether this is on or not.
How do I back up my ledger?
Owe Book keeps a recovery copy of your ledger on your device. For a copy you control, use Settings → Export Backup to save a file wherever you like, and Restore from Backup… to bring it back. Restoring replaces everything in Owe Book.
Can I add entries with Siri?
With Owe Book Pro, yes — say something like "Add an entry in Owe Book", or use the Shortcuts app. Apple handles the voice request; Owe Book only receives the entry details and saves them on your device.
How do I lock the app?
Turn on Settings → Require Face ID (Require Touch ID on a Mac; Owe Book Pro). Owe Book will ask for Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode each time you open it, and your widgets stay hidden while the lock is on.
Privacy and data
What data does the app collect?
Your ledger stays on your devices (and your own private iCloud if you use iCloud Sync) — we never see it. A shared group is stored in its owner's iCloud and shared through Apple with the people in it; we never see that either. We collect only anonymous usage analytics and crash reports through Firebase, never linked to your identity and never including your ledger or group content. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.
